📍 Where Tibetans live in Toronto

  • Parkdale: Queen Street West, known as Little Tibet, with Tibetan restaurants, shops and the 501 Queen streetcar.
  • Etobicoke: near the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC) and several Buddhist temples.
  • High Park and Roncesvalles: close to Parkdale, with parks and the subway.
  • North York, York and Weston, and the wider GTA: often more space for the price.

⚖️ Your rights as a renter in Ontario

  • Most landlords must use Ontario’s standard lease for a written rental agreement.
  • A landlord can ask for a rent deposit of up to one month’s rent (used for your last month) and a key deposit that you get back. A “damage” or “security” deposit is not allowed.
  • For most rentals, rent can go up only once every 12 months, with 90 days’ written notice.
  • Always get a receipt for every payment.
  • ⚠️ If you share the kitchen or bathroom with the owner or the owner’s family, Ontario’s renter rules usually do not apply. Agree on rent, rules and notice in writing.
  • Problems? The Landlord and Tenant Board handles disputes, and free settlement services can help.

🛡️ Stay safe when renting

  1. See the place in person, or by live video call if you are not in Toronto yet.
  2. Never send a deposit before you have seen the room and met the landlord.
  3. Be careful if the rent is much cheaper than others nearby, or the landlord says they are “abroad”.
  4. Get a written agreement and a receipt.
  5. Tell a friend where you are going for a viewing.
