Most people on the board are honest neighbours. These simple habits keep it that way.
Renting a room or apartment
- See the place in person, or by live video call if you are not in Canada yet, before paying anything.
- Never send a deposit, first month’s rent or “holding fee” by e-transfer, gift card or crypto to someone you have not met.
- Be careful if the landlord says they are out of the country and will mail the keys.
- Ask for a written lease. In Ontario, most residential rentals must use the Ontario Standard Lease.
- If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Hiring a tradesperson
- Ask for the licence number and check it. Look for our “Licensed” badge.
- Get a written quote before work starts. Do not pay the full amount up front.
Jobs
- A real employer will never ask you to pay to get a job, buy equipment, or cash a cheque for them.
- Do not share your SIN until you have a written job offer from an employer you have checked.
Buying and selling
- Meet in a busy public place in daylight, or at the community centre. Bring a friend.
- Check the item before paying. Use cash or e-transfer only at the time of pickup.
Travel companion
- Meet the person first, ideally with family. Share flight details with someone you trust.
- Never carry packages for someone else.
Protect your information
- Keep conversations in our private messages until you are comfortable.
- Never share passwords, banking details, passport or SIN numbers in listings or messages.
If something feels wrong

- In an emergency, call 911.
