The Tibetan Community (tibetancommunity.ca) is a community notice board run by Tibetan Community (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. We follow Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and its fair information principles.
Who is responsible
Our Privacy Officer is accountable for how we handle personal information: Tenzin, tenzin@tibetancommunity.ca, Toronto, ON.
What we collect
- Account details: name, email address, password (stored encrypted), city, optional phone number, and whether you chose a Poster or Member account.
- If you sign in with Facebook or Google: your name, email and profile picture from that service. We never receive your Facebook or Google password.
- Listings you post: text, photos, price, area or nearest intersection, dates and contact preferences.
- Messages and applications you send to other users through the site.
- Technical information: IP address, browser type, pages visited and security logs, used to keep the site safe and working.
- Settings you choose: language, text size, posting style, saved searches and alert preferences.
Why we collect it
- To create and run your account and let you post, search, save, message and apply.
- To review every listing before it is published, and to prevent scams, spam and abuse.
- To send you account emails (sign-up confirmation, password reset, listing approved or needs changes, new messages).
- To send optional alerts and community news, only if you opt in. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To meet legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
Consent
By creating an account you consent to the uses described here. We will ask for separate consent before sending marketing or newsletter emails, as required by Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). You may withdraw consent at any time; some features may then stop working.
Who can see your information
- Visitors who are not signed in can see listing titles, descriptions, photos, price and general area only.
- Signed-in members can also see the phone number and email you choose to show, and the exact address if you add one.
- Our admin and volunteer moderators can see listings and reports to approve listings and keep the site safe.
- Service providers that help run the site, such as our web host, email delivery service, Cloudflare (bot protection), and Facebook or Google if you use them to sign in. They may only use the information to provide their service to us. Some may store information outside Canada, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law.
- We do not sell your personal information.
How long we keep it
Listings expire after 30 days and can be renewed. We keep account information while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where we must keep it longer for legal or security reasons.
How we protect it
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), encrypted password storage, a security firewall, limited admin access with two-step login, and regular backups. No website is completely secure, so please do not share sensitive information such as SIN, passport or banking details in listings or messages.
Your rights
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account. Most of this can be done in My board → Settings. You can also write to our Privacy Officer; we will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and to remember your settings, and Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots. See our Cookie Policy for details.
Age
You must be 18 or older to create an account.
Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the date above. For significant changes we will notify account holders by email.
